The technical solution that ‘extracts’ this heat is known as the Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) and its reliability and accessibility is fast making it one of the most common heating systems to be installed across Northern Europe. By drilling into the earth and inserting a pipe ‘loop’ we can pump down ‘cold’ water and return it back to the surface with a noticeable temperature difference, when this warmer water is passed through the GSHP the temperature differential will be multiplied, the now chilled water will be returned to the ‘loop’ to be re-heated and the process continues.
GSHP is extremely good at ‘off gas grid’ areas that require a renewable heat source.
